Quick Answer
Most Hakone private tours look similar on the surface — a local guide, Lake Ashi, Owakudani, Hakone Shrine — but the price works in two very different ways. Four of the five tours we compared charge roughly the same total whether you’re 2 or 4 travelers. One charges per person, so its total doubles for a group of 4. We checked the real totals for 2 and 4 adults on Viator and matched each tour to a type of traveler.
- Best Overall: Hakone Customized Private Tour in 1 Day with Licensed Guide — 4.8★ from 280 reviews, ¥53,000 for 2 or 4 adults (6 hours, on foot and public transport).
- Best Half Day by Car: Private Hakone Half-day Car Tour with Hotel Pickup — ¥44,000 per group of up to 5, with a guide who also drives.
- Best Meeting at Hakone-Yumoto: Private Tour – Hakone Day Trip — about ¥55,000 for 2 or 4, starting at the main gateway station.
- Best for Couples: Hakone Private Custom Tour: Mt. Fuji View, Nature & Shrine — ¥61,360 for 2, but charged per person (¥122,720 for 4).
- Best Full Day by Car: Hakone in 1 Day by Private Car with Licensed Guide — ¥121,600 for 2, ¥132,800 for 4, with pickup in Hakone or at Odawara Station.
Two things to know before you book. First, on four of the five tours, transport inside Hakone, entrance fees and lunch are extra — budget for them on top of the tour price. Second, all five list free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start.
Hakone Private Tour or Mt. Fuji Private Tour?
These are different trips, and it’s worth deciding which one you want before comparing prices.
- A Hakone private tour (this article) spends the whole day in Hakone: Lake Ashi, Hakone Shrine, the ropeway and Owakudani, the art museums, and the hot-spring town. Most of the tours below start in Hakone — at your hotel, Hakone-Yumoto Station, Gora Station or Odawara Station — so they suit travelers who are staying in Hakone or arriving by train.
- A Mt. Fuji private tour from Tokyo picks you up in Tokyo and drives you to Mt. Fuji’s Fifth Station and the Fuji Five Lakes, sometimes with a short Hakone stop. If seeing Mt. Fuji up close is the goal, compare those in our Mt. Fuji private tours from Tokyo guide.
Mt. Fuji can be visible from Hakone on clear days — several of these tours mention views of it from Lake Ashi — but no Hakone tour can promise it.

Totals are what Viator showed for November 11, 2026, when we checked on October 15 and rechecked on October 16, 2026, for 2 and 4 adults. The Half-day Car Tour wasn’t bookable for November 11 on our recheck; its price on nearby dates was the same ¥44,000 per group. Prices can differ by date, and the yen price on some listings moves slightly from day to day. Ratings and review counts are as shown on each listing.
Group Price vs. Per-Person Price: Why the Total Matters
Viator shows most of these tours as a “from” price per person, which can be misleading for a private tour. When we entered 2 and then 4 adults for the same date:
- Three tours kept the same total (or within ¥40): the Licensed Guide tour, the Half-day Car Tour, and the Hakone Day Trip. For a family or group of 4, the price per person roughly halves.
- The Private Car tour priced by vehicle: a regular car for up to 2, a minivan for up to 4, and a van for up to 7 (¥146,000 for 2 on our date). Going from 2 to 4 added ¥11,200.
- The Custom Tour (Fuji View) charged per person: 4 adults cost exactly twice as much as 2.
If you’re traveling as a couple, the gap between these tours is smaller. If you’re a group of 4, the pricing model matters more than the “from” price. For more on how private guide prices work across Japan, see our Japan private tour guide cost guide.
Individual Tour Reviews
1. Hakone Customized Private Tour in 1 Day with Licensed Guide — Best Overall
This tour, from the same operator behind several of our Kyoto and Nara picks, has the largest review base on our list: 4.8 stars from 280 reviews, with 97% of travelers recommending it. You pick 3–4 places for the 6-hour option or 4–5 for the 8-hour option from a list that includes Lake Ashi, Hakone Shrine, the Hakone Ropeway, Owakudani, the Hakone Open-Air Museum and several other museums. On November 11, the 6-hour tour cost ¥53,000 and the 8-hour tour ¥58,000 — the same total for 2 or 4 adults.
How it differs from the other four: it’s a walking tour. The listing says a private vehicle isn’t included and that public transport or local taxis may be used between sites, so transport, entrance fees and lunch are on top of the tour price. The listing also notes that the guide’s entry fees are covered only for sights on its list.
Good to know: you meet your guide on foot within a set area of Hakone, and the guide contacts you after booking to plan the day. Start times on our date ran from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The Viator page says it’s booked 74 days in advance on average.
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start.

2. Private Hakone Half-day Car Tour with Hotel Pickup — Best Half Day by Car
If you have only half a day, or don’t want to deal with Hakone’s trains, cable cars and buses, this is the simplest option. It has 4.9 stars from 102 reviews, with 98% recommending it, and costs ¥44,000 per group of up to 5 — the lowest total on our list. Your guide also drives, and the listing includes the air-conditioned vehicle and parking fees.
How it differs from the other four: it’s the only half-day tour and the only one with hotel pickup at this price. The listing describes stops such as Hakone Shrine, Owakudani and Lake Ashi, with the guide suggesting an itinerary at pickup based on the season, the weather and your interests.
Good to know: the guide waits at your hotel’s front desk or at a train or bus station you choose; the car has “Sunny Tours Japan” on the side. The listing doesn’t state the pickup area, so confirm your hotel when you book. Extra activity tickets aren’t included. Confirmation arrives within 48 hours of booking, and the listing asks you to say how many children under 5 are joining, since they need a car seat. It isn’t wheelchair accessible.
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start.

3. Private Tour – Hakone Day Trip — Best Meeting at Hakone-Yumoto
This tour starts at the ticket gate of Hakone-Yumoto Station, the main entry point for travelers arriving by train. It has 4.9 stars from 91 reviews, with 99% recommending it. On our date, the 6-hour custom tour cost ¥55,000 for 2 and ¥54,960 for 4, and the listing’s itinerary includes Hakone Shrine and a sightseeing cruise on Lake Ashi.
How it differs from the other four: it’s the most upfront about extra costs. The listing estimates about ¥6,900 per person for transport and admission (¥5,000), meals (¥1,800) and an optional experience (¥100), on top of the tour price — while the guide’s own expenses are included. It also offers a vehicle option from Tokyo, which cost ¥172,500 for 2 on our date; if you want a Tokyo pickup, compare it with the tours in our Mt. Fuji private tours guide.
Good to know: start times on our date were 9:30, 10:00 and 10:30 AM, and the tour ends back at Hakone-Yumoto Station. It’s offered in English. The Viator page says it’s booked 72 days in advance on average.
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start.

4. Hakone Private Custom Tour: Mt. Fuji View, Nature & Shrine — Best for Couples
This tour starts at Gora Station, in the middle of the Hakone loop, and has 4.8 stars from 52 reviews, with 96% recommending it. The guide helps plan the day around the weather and your interests, guides you on public transport, and helps with photos. For 2 adults it cost ¥61,360 for 5 hours, ¥64,590 for 6 hours and ¥74,278 for 7 hours on our date.
How it differs from the other four: it’s the only one on our list that charges per person. The listing mentions group discounts, but on our date 4 adults cost ¥122,720 for 5 hours — exactly twice the price for 2. That makes it a reasonable choice for a couple and an expensive one for a family. Transport fees during the tour aren’t included.
Good to know: the guide waits at the Gora Station ticket gate with a sign, and the tour ends back there. Start times on our date ran from 8:30 to 11:30 AM. It’s offered in English and two other languages. It isn’t wheelchair accessible.
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start.

5. Hakone in 1 Day by Private Car with Licensed Guide — Best Full Day by Car
This is the full-day version of a car tour, from the same operator as our Best Overall pick. It has a perfect 5.0 from 10 reviews — the smallest review base on our list, so weigh the rating with that in mind. You choose 3–4 sites from the listing, and a licensed guide and driver take you around in a private vehicle.
How it differs from the other four: the price depends on the vehicle. On our date, a regular car for up to 2 cost ¥121,600, a minivan for up to 4 cost ¥132,800, and a van for up to 7 cost ¥146,000. It’s the most expensive tour here, but it’s also the only full-day option with a vehicle, and the listing says it’s wheelchair and stroller accessible.
Good to know: pickup is at your hotel in the Hakone area or near Hakone-Yumoto Station, and Odawara Station is also an option. Entrance fees and lunch aren’t included. The listing says there are only a limited number of car and booster seats, and no rear-facing seats, so contact the operator if you need one. Start times on our date ran from 8:00 to 11:00 AM. The Viator page says it’s booked 87 days in advance on average.
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start.

What’s Not Included: Costs to Budget For
Hakone’s sights are spread out and linked by trains, cable cars, buses and boats, so the tour price is rarely the whole cost.
- Transport inside Hakone isn’t included on the three tours that use public transport (the Licensed Guide tour, the Hakone Day Trip and the Custom Tour). The two car tours include the vehicle.
- Entrance fees and lunch are extra on all of the full-day tours. The Hakone Day Trip listing gives the most specific estimate: about ¥6,900 per person in total.
- Your guide’s costs vary: the Hakone Day Trip includes the guide’s necessary expenses, while the Licensed Guide tour covers the guide’s entry fees only for sights on its list.
If you’re arriving from Tokyo by train and plan to use a lot of public transport, our Suica and IC card guide covers paying for trains and buses.
How to Choose
- First time in Hakone and want a trusted pick? The Licensed Guide tour has the most reviews and the same total for 2 or 4.
- Only half a day, or don’t want to use public transport? The Half-day Car Tour is the lowest total and picks you up.
- Arriving at Hakone-Yumoto by train? The Hakone Day Trip meets right at the ticket gate and lists its extra costs clearly.
- Traveling as a couple? The Custom Tour from Gora is priced per person, so it’s most competitive for 2.
- A family, a group of 5–7, or anyone who needs step-free access? The full-day Private Car tour costs the most but adds a vehicle sized to your group.
- Want Mt. Fuji’s Fifth Station with a Tokyo pickup? See our Mt. Fuji private tours from Tokyo instead.
